The most common types of laptop problems

Laptop portability comes at the cost of high integration, compact space, limited cooling, higher failure rates and maintenance difficulties than desktops. These are the categories we deal with most of the time:

Water/liquid ingress: Milk tea, coffee, water spilled on the keyboard, is the laptop's "number one killer." Liquid infiltration into the motherboard will cause short circuit and corrosion, the more timely treatment, the higher the repair rate. The following is dedicated to first aid methods.
No power on/no power on: Press the power button and there is no response, or there is a response but the screen is black. It involves power supply, motherboard, memory and screen. It needs to be checked step by step.
screen failure: Broken screen, distorted screen, splash screen, and no backlight. You can change the screen for broken screen and backlight problems, but be wary of the graphics card or cable for distorted screen.
Keyboard/touchpad failure: The keys do not respond, the keys are connected, and the touchpad is jumping around. There is a high incidence of liquid entering, which may also be due to poor cable contact.
Overheating frequency reduction, fan spinning: The air outlet is blocked by dust, the cooling thermal paste dries up, and after a while, it becomes hot, stuck, and the fan roars.
Battery does not charge/life collapse: The battery is bulging, not charged, and can only be fully charged for half an hour. The bulging battery has potential safety hazards, and it is recommended to replace it as soon as possible.

In the first few minutes after the water enters, it directly determines whether the motherboard is "showered" or "scrapped". Please be sure to operate in this order:

Cut the power immediately.: Press and hold the power button immediately to force shutdown, unplug the battery if you can, and unplug the power adapter. The faster the power is cut off, the smaller the short circuit damage.

Do not do these three things.: Do not try to turn on "see if it can still be used", do not charge, do not blow hot air with a hair dryer-these will expand the local short circuit into a large area burned.
Get it repaired as soon as possible.: Surface drying is only comfort, liquid has seeped into the motherboard. The sooner we send for repair, the higher the probability of recovery of the motherboard after disassembly and cleaning. Send for repair within 24 hours of clean water, the repair rate is usually above 80%; drag on for a week, corrosion will make the repair rate drop significantly.

Why laptop repair tests technology more

A lot of repair shops on the laptop "only change not repair", often let you change the whole motherboard (often thousands of RMB). The reason is that the laptop repair threshold is indeed higher:

high integration: CPU, graphics card, south bridge are soldered to the motherboard, unlike desktop can be inserted and replaced at will, once damaged need BGA repair station for chip-level soldering.

ThinkPad into milk tea, clean + change keyboard to save

In April 2026, a college student's ThinkPad X1 Carbon was splashed with milk tea on the keyboard. It was still working at that time. Two days later, some keys failed and a USB port was not recognized. After disassembly, there were obvious traces of milk stain corrosion on the motherboard. We first cleaned the motherboard with ultrasonic cleaning machine and washing water, and then replaced the corroded keyboard assembly and a burned USB control chip. The whole machine functions were fully restored. The cost was RMB 580. The customer said,"It saves more than RMB 4,000 compared with buying a new one." Lenovo Saver CPU Fake Solder, Repair Station Rescue

In February 2026, a Lenovo Saver Y9000P that had been used for two years had no display on the boot and no signal on the external display. The detection determined that the CPU BGA solder joint was weak (the high heat generation model of the game). We used the BGA repair station to re-implant the ball solder on the CPU. The power was turned on once, and the running points and game frame rate returned to normal. The whole repair took about 3 hours and charged RMB 450. When it comes to laptop repair, people often ask

The laptop can still be turned on after it is flooded. Is it okay?

No. It can be used temporarily after water enters, but often the liquid has not yet flowed to the key parts. The liquid remaining on the motherboard will continue to corrode the circuit, and the failure will occur after a few days to a few weeks. As long as it has entered the liquid, it is recommended to disassemble the machine for cleaning and inspection.
