Computer blue screen crash troubleshooting and repair

When you are using your computer, the screen suddenly turns blue, and a bunch of English and a ":(" emoticon pop up-blue screen is one of the most troublesome problems for Windows users. In fact, there are specific reasons behind blue screen. Understand it, and you can solve half of the problems yourself.

Blue screen is not bad luck, there is a reason

Blue screen is not bad luck, there is a reason

Blue screen (Blue Screen of Death) is Windows self-protection when it encounters serious errors that cannot be handled. It is not random, and each blue screen points to a specific cause. The most common types are:

  • Memory problems (about 30%): Memory module poor contact, gold contacts oxidation, particle damage, is the first major culprit blue screen. Performance is mostly random blue screen, code is not the same.
  • drive conflictAfter installing a new graphics driver, antivirus software or a peripheral driver, it starts blue screen, mostly because the driver is incompatible.
  • hard drive failureHard drive bad sectors cause system file reading errors, which will cause blue screen, often accompanied by computer card change and file opening.
  • System file corruption: Forced shutdown and virus damage cause damage to critical system files.
  • overheating: Protection triggered by overheating of CPU or graphics card, high incidence in summer and old machines.
  • New hardware incompatibility: The newly added memory and hard drive are incompatible with the original hardware.
Understand blue screen code, symptomatic start

Understand blue screen code, symptomatic start

The string of "Stop Code" at the bottom of the blue screen interface is the key clue for investigation. The next time the blue screen is displayed, take a photo with your mobile phone. The meaning of several high-frequency codes:

  • MEMORY_MANAGEMENTMemory management errors, RAM modules first, hard drives second.
  • IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL: Mostly driver conflicts or memory failures, think about what new drivers/software was installed recently.
  • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA: Memory or hard drive data read error, first test memory and then check hard drive.
  • CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIEDCrashes of critical system processes, mostly system file corruption or hard drive problems.
  • VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE: Graphics card driver or graphics card failure, reinstall the graphics card driver to try.
  • KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE: Could be a drive, memory or system file issue, or it could be virus-related.

If you are too lazy to study the code, you can also use Microsoft's official "blue screen analysis" idea: in safe mode, use tools to read the dump file in C:\Windows\Minidump, which can be accurate to the driver file in question.

Blue screen self-help, check in this order

Blue screen self-help, check in this order

Don't rush to repair blue screen. Many cases can be solved by yourself. In order from easy to difficult:

  1. Step 1: Think about what you did recently.: New software, drivers, hardware? Try uninstalling/unplugging first. This is the most common trigger for blue screen.
  2. Step 2: Go to Safe Mode: Forcibly shut down three times to trigger recovery environment when booting, enter "safe mode". Without blue screen in safe mode, you can basically judge that it is a driver/software problem rather than hardware.
  3. Step 3: Wipe the memory gold contacts: Unplug the RAM module after power failure, rub the gold contacts (gold contact) with an eraser, and then plug it back in. Desktop is easy to operate, laptop recommended for repair.
  4. Step 4: Check your hard drive health: Use CrystalDiskInfo to see the hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status, yellow warning should be vigilant, timely backup data.
  5. Step 5: System Repair: Administrator Command Prompt Runsfc /scannowRepair system files; reset or reinstall the system before you can.
  6. Step 6: Measuring Memory: Run it once with Windows 'own Memory Diagnostic Tool or MemTest86, and report an error indicating that the memory should be replaced.

After doing this, about 70% of the blue screen can be located or even solved. The remaining 30%(motherboard, CPU, graphics hardware failure) requires professional equipment to detect.

In these cases, it is recommended to send them directly for repair.

In these cases, it is recommended to send them directly for repair.

Although a lot of blue screens can save themselves, it is recommended not to toss around and send them directly for repair in the following cases, so as not to make things worse:

  • You can't even get into safe mode.: It is likely to be a hardware level problem (motherboard, CPU, hard drive), which requires professional testing.
  • Accompanied by abnormal noise, burnt smell and smoke: immediately cut off the power and send it for repair. Continued use may enlarge the damage.
  • Hard drive has important data and frequent blue screen: Don't try again and again to avoid further damage to the hard drive and data loss. In this case, it is recommended to contact us first.data backup and recoveryRepair the machine again.
  • Laptop blue screen: Laptop disassembly is complicated, and the risk of operation is high. It is recommended to hand it over to a professional master.
  • Check it yourself or blue screen: The problem is explained more deeply, and it saves time to leave it to professional equipment for positioning.
⚠️ Don't do anything on a blue screen:Don't reinstall the system directly at a glance at the blue screen--if it is caused by bad sectors of the hard drive or memory hardware failure, it is useless to reinstall it a hundred times, and it may also lose the data that can be recovered. Check the hardware first, and then talk about reinstallation.
real case

This is how we help our clients solve problems.

Frequent blue screen, actually two memory incompatible

In April 2026, a customer installed a memory on his computer and the computer began to blue screen frequently. The code was varied. He reinstalled the system twice and it was useless. We used MemTest86 to test and found that the old and new memories mixed in unstable errors at high frequencies. After the two memories were reduced to compatible frequencies, the fault disappeared and solved at zero cost. Note: It is best to choose the same brand and frequency for adding memory. Mixed insertion is easy to cause compatibility problems.

Hard drive bad sectors trigger blue screen, save data first and then change disk

In June 2026, an office computer repeatedly blue screen, the code is CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. Detection found that the system disk (a mechanical hard drive used for 5 years) has a large number of bad sectors, system file reading errors often. There are important work documents in the customer disk, we first backup the data to the new solid state hard drive, then do system migration, and finally replace the old disk. Not only to preserve the data, but also to solve the blue screen, boot speed from 1 minute to 15 seconds.

* The above is the reference price, the specific quote after diagnosis shall prevail; batch/enterprise customers can negotiate discounts. Final pricing is subject to the actual on-site inspection.

On the diagnostic fee and parts safety: Hardware diagnosis means disassembly, power-up and instrument-based troubleshooting, which takes engineer time and test equipment, so we charge a basic diagnostic fee for on-site and in-store repair jobs (the amount depends on the item and the device; the reference prices on this page are a starting point only). If you decide not to repair after the diagnosis, or stop midway, you pay only the basic diagnostic fee and no repair labour. Every component and all of your parts are logged and returned exactly as received. We never remove or swap a customer's parts - which is the difference between a proper service provider and a back-street repair shop.
FAQ

About blue screen crash detection, we are often asked

Will forced shutdown after blue screen damage the computer?

Occasionally a small problem, but frequent forced shutdown (especially mechanical hard drive read and write) may cause hard drive bad sectors and system file damage. Blue screen recommended to let it automatically restart, if stuck and then press the power button.

Blue screen once or twice a month, do you need a tube?

Frequent blue screen can be observed first, write down the blue screen code. If the frequency is getting higher and higher (several times a week), it is necessary to carefully investigate, often the hardware is declining.

Can you fix all blue screens?

No. Reload can only solve the blue screen at the system and driver and software level. If it is a hardware failure such as memory, hard drive, motherboard, etc., reload is invalid. This is why we emphasize detecting hardware first.

Can you watch the blue screen for me remotely?

Blue screen that can enter the system can remotely assist in analysis (read dump file location problem driver). If you can't enter the system or hardware failure, you need to go to the store or on-site processing.
