Motherboard problems, many shops directly let you "replace the whole motherboard", often seven or eight hundred or even thousands. In fact, most motherboard failures-capacitor bulging, chip solder, interface burn-out-can be solved through chip-level repair, often only one-third of the cost of replacing the board.

What is chip-level repair?

Motherboard maintenance is divided into two levels: one is the "board level"--where the board is broken, replace which board, simple and direct but expensive; the other is the "chip level"--locate the fault to a specific chip, capacitor, or circuit on the motherboard, and then repair it by replacing components and re-soldering.

For example, board-level maintenance is like "if the room lights are broken, tear down the whole wall and rebuild it," while chip-level repair is "replace the light bulb and fix the switch." Obviously, the latter is cheaper, but it requires much more technical requirements--you need to understand the circuit diagram, use the oscilloscope, and have professional equipment such as BGA repair station.

We are equipped with BGA rework station, hot air gun, oscilloscope, motherboard diagnostic card and professional maintenance drawings, which can diagnose and repair the motherboard at component level. This is also the biggest difference between us and ordinary "replacement shop".

These motherboard failures can usually be repaired.

Not all motherboard problems need to be replaced. The following common faults have a high repair rate at the chip level:

Capacitance bulge/leakage: Motherboard power supply part of the electrolytic capacitor aging bulge, performance for boot difficulties, instability. Replace the same specifications capacitor can be, is the most classic motherboard maintenance.

Of course, there are also cases that should be replaced: when the motherboard is burned in a large area, the multilayer board is broken, the liquid is seriously corroded, or the motherboard is too old to be repaired, we will truthfully recommend replacement, and we will not charge money for hard repair.

BGA soldering, the core technology of chip-level repair

BGA (ball grid array package) is now the mainstream packaging form of CPU, graphics chip, memory particles-the bottom of the chip is hundreds of tiny solder balls, directly soldered to the motherboard. This package is harder to service, but a failed solder joint can still be reworked by removing the chip and re-balling it.

The process of BGA repair is: first use the repair station to accurately control the temperature, remove the faulty chip from the motherboard; clean the pad, re-implant the chip (replace the new solder ball); then align the position, and re-solder it back with accurate temperature curve. The whole process requires extremely high temperature and method, and the chip or motherboard may be scrapped if the temperature difference is a little.

This technology is the most technical part of chip-level repair, and it is also the reason why many repair shops do not have it and can only let you change the motherboard. ⚠️ Beware of the phrase "the motherboard is broken."Some repair shop encounter any do not boot will casually say "motherboard is broken, change a", one is to save trouble, the other is to change the board profit is high. RTX 3080 garbled screen, planting ball repair saves RMB 6000

In March 2026, a gamer's RTX 3080 graphics card crashed when running 3D games. The detection was that the memory particles were soldered (high heat graphics card failure). We used the BGA ball planting tool to re-solder the memory. After soldering, we ran 3DMark and donut burn-in test. The frame rate and temperature were all normal. The charge was RMB 450. The customer sighed "I almost spent RMB 6000 to buy a new card."

ASUS B550M Motherboard Burned, Chip Level Repair

In June 2026, a group of PC builds burned a large area of ASUS B550M-PLUS motherboard power supply circuit due to power failure, involving VRM power supply and USB control chip. It costs more than RMB 700 to replace the same new board. Motherboard is broken, repair and exchange which cost-effective?

Look at the type of fault and the value of the motherboard. Capacitor, chip, interface type fault repair usually only one-third to half of the replacement price, very cost-effective; but if it is an old motherboard or a large area burned, it is more appropriate to replace. We will test first, truthfully tell you which is more valuable, never hard repair.

How long does it last after chip-level repair? Will it break again?

Standard operation chip-level repair (such as replacement of new capacitors, professional BGA ball implantation) stability is guaranteed, we repair parts warranty 90 days. Many repaired motherboards and stable use for several years.

Is the graphics card garbled screen, crash is the memory broken? Can it be repaired?

A large proportion of graphics card garbled screen, crash is memory or core false solder, not the chip itself is broken. Through BGA repair re-soldering, most can be repaired, the cost is much lower than changing the graphics card. It is recommended to detect first, do not rush to buy a new card.
